Meet Gabriel, the 29 year old local boy and founder of The Jock Shop. Gabriel left his previous job in finance back in 2014 and decided to start his own business, and he’s here today to answer some of your questions.

1. Why The Jock Shop?

I discovered that there was a gap in the market. Girls have tons of underwear to choose from, but for us guys there’s a lot less choice. I’d often go into one of the local department stores and see the same brands over and over again. There was rarely anything that I really wanted to buy. There are lots of underwear and swimwear bands out there, and I wanted to bring some of the cooler designs to Singapore (and Southeast Asia) and sell them on a platform that was easy to access, and navigate and delivery was quick.

2. Why don’t you open a physical store?

I started the business with my savings, so I couldn’t afford to open a physical store at first. I also figured that online might work well for mens underwear - I mean, it’s not as if you can try it on in a physical store anyway! Being online store gives us the ability to hold more stock at lower cost, so we can offer our customers the best deals. We may look at opening a physical store as our product range expands beyond underwear and swimwear, but there isn’t a store in the pipeline. If a customer wants to take a look at a particular item before they buy, they are welcome to visit my office and I’d be happy to let them see it in person. Just drop us a call in advance to fix a time.

3. Boxers or briefs?

Ah, now that’s a tough one. I guess it depends on my mood. I’d pick a pair of briefs for the gym, and a jock strap is always a good choice for a run. They’re also surprisingly comfortable - I don’t wear them all the time, but I know that lots of my customers do!
4. Since you mentioned jock straps, which would you wear?
The C-in2 GRIP jock. It looks awesome - really sporty, and something completely new in terms of jock strap design.

5. What’s your favourite item in your store?

There are lots of great pieces, but my personal favourite is probably the 2eros X series brief. It fits perfectly, and the material is super soft.

6. What’s the best thing about your job?

I love it all. Chatting to the customers, attending photoshoots and media events, meeting the models and Instagramers and planning the expansion of my business! Ok, I lie, preparing the accounts isn’t fun, but hey, gotta be done.

7. What are your plans for the future?

We’re in the final stages of finalising deals with a couple of really cool underwear and swimwear brands (including Addicted) so we’re hoping to bring them to our online store very soon. We’re always on the look-out for new and exciting brands and designers - if our customers want it, we’ll try our best to bring it to our store. Oh, and we’re just about to launch our new-look website, which will be as much an online store as a lifestyle portal, with articles, behind-the-scenes previews of our photoshoots, and interviews with our models and leading underwear and swimwear designers. We’ll also be out and about sponsoring a bunch of events around Asia too, so come say hello if you see us!

8. Why don’t you model more for The Jock Shop?

3 letters. G.Y.M. I fear it. I’m the guy behind the camera these days, which I really enjoy. We work with a great group of models with RIDICULOUS bodies - I really can’t compete! To keep everyone happy though, I promise I’ll occasionally ditch my shirt and jump infront of the camera :-)
9. Is it true that you stuff your models to make them... ahem... bigger?
No socks, no tissue paper, I promise. A lot of it is actually down to our models (!) and also the underwear and swimwear we carry, as much of it is designed to enhance what they’ve already got. However, we do use a couple of industry techniques to create a uniform look; put it this way, we try and leave something to the imagination!
